Support Key Divestment Bill That is Stuck in Senate

The Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act will put much-needed pressure on Sudan to end the genocide. The bill has already passed the House of Representatives 418-1, but it's currently stuck in the Senate.

Help us convince your senator to support quick passage of this key bill for Darfur. Fill out the form in the right column to send a message urging your senators to support this bill.

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am deeply concerned that the United States is not doing enough to stop the Sudanese government's campaign of murder, rape and displacement in Darfur. I am writing to urge you to support the swift passage in the Senate of the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act, which passed in the House of Representatives 418 - 1 on July 31.

This important legislation would protect the right of states to divest from foreign companies that help fund the Sudanese government's actions in Darfur, would prohibit U.S. government contracts with such companies, and would allow states to ban contracts with them.

We know that economic pressure on Sudan has an effect. The Sudanese government blocked deployment of U.N. peacekeepers in Darfur last year, but agreed this year to another peacekeeping force, thanks in part to U.S. sanctions.

But peacekeepers are not on the ground yet, and it is unclear how genuine Sudan's commitments are. We must maintain economic pressure on Sudan until it allows peacekeepers to enter Darfur, withdraws support from genocidal militia, and participates fully in peace talks.

I urge you to support the swift passage of the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act.
