Keep up the heat

President Obama is just days away from meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao. We need to keep up the heat and make sure he makes Sudan a priority in his talks with China.

The ultimate success of the new Sudan policy depends of presidential leadership in building support among countries like China which hold leverage with Sudan to put pressure on Khartoum to change its behavior.

As an advocate for Darfur and all of Sudan, I am writing you today to urge you to sign the Wolf-Capuano congressional letter to President Obama.

With the release of the new U.S. strategy to bring peace to Darfur and all of Sudan, President Obama's trip to China is the first test of the administration's commitment to building a real coalition of countries to pressure Khartoum to work for peace.

As Sudan's largest trading partner, China has tremendous leverage with Sudan but has failed to use this leverage in the past to convince Khartoum to work for peace.

The Wolf-Capuano letter urges the President to feature Sudan prominently on his agenda with China.  It also asks the President to push China to use its influence over Sudan to end attacks in Darfur, to implement the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, prepare for free and fair elections, and to make a renewed commitment to the ongoing peace process.
