Peacekeepers attacked - act now!

Last weekend, 10 African Union peacekeepers were attacked and killed as the violence in Darfur raged onto their base.

Their deaths serve as a tragic reminder of what's at stake - and the tragedies that will continue to occur until we deploy the strong international peacekeeping force that was authorized by the UN in July to Darfur.

Ask President Bush and UN Secretary-General Ban to act to ensure that deployment of the peacekeepers is not delayed.

The deadly attacks this weekend on an African Union base in Darfur sends the world a tragic reminder that the violence in Darfur has not slowed. To the contrary, it has now it expanded to the overburdened A.U. peacekeeping mission.

This development only raises the urgency for the deployment of international peacekeepers. World leaders must make sure the international community delivers on its promises - without delay.

Resolution 1769, the Security Council resolution authorizing peacekeepers, looks good -- on paper. But Sudan blocked the implementation of a similar resolution passed by the Security Council a year ago. No international troops reached Darfur -- it was the first time the UN has ever failed to deploy an authorized peacekeeping mission.

We cannot allow Sudan to once again block the will of the international community.

Resolution 1769 must be implemented in a meaningful and effective way to save hundreds of thousands of lives. We call on you to:
            
 - Fully deliver on the U.S. financial commitments to the Darfur peacekeeping force;
 - Work with the U.N. and with existing U.S. contractors to help build camps and barracks in Darfur to hasten deployment of peacekeepers;
 - Help the U.N. secure troop, police, equipment, and financial commitments for immediate deployment of peacekeepers, including much-needed helicopter units;
 - Press the U.N. to meet or exceed the established timeline to transfer current A.U. peacekeepers to U.N. command no later than December 31; and
 - Work with allies to ensure the Sudanese government's full participation in a just and inclusive peace process, and to overcome any attempts to obstruct or delay the protection of civilians or the peace process.

It is past time that the world took action in Darfur. President Bush and Secretary-General Ban, you must use your full diplomatic weight to ensure immediate implementation of Resolution 1769.

Darfurians have been living with this kind of brutality for years, and will continue to do so until you act. Please use your influence to bring peace to Darfur now.
