Congress must support funding for Darfur

Congress is preparing to vote on a bill that will include significant funding for peacekeeping and humanitarian aid in Darfur.

Your representative needs to hear from you that the men, women, and children of Darfur cannot afford anymore delays. Funding for Darfur can bring hope to the thousands who have weathered half a decade of genocide.

I am writing to urge you to fill critical gaps in FY08 funding for Darfur peacekeeping, humanitarian aid, political process, and sanctions enforcement. With a crisis as fluid and chaotic as Darfur, unforeseen costs are a fact of life, and lives often depend on meeting those costs.

As many as 400,000 people have already been killed in Darfur, and more than 2 million have been driven from their homes. 2008 has already witnessed a new Sudanese military offensive in west Darfur that has destroyed villages, killed an untold number of civilians, and displaced over 100,000 more.  We must do our part to make sure we help protect the survivors of these atrocities from further harm.

The upcoming FY08 Supplemental Funding Bill is our best chance to fill critical Darfur funding gaps. I therefore urge you to support full funding to:

* Train, equip, and operate the UNAMID peacekeeping mission;

* Provide critical disaster and famine assistance;

* Support true democratization as mandated by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement;

* Conduct intensive and ongoing diplomacy; and

* Fully and effectively enforce existing U.S. sanctions.

Please help protect the victims of genocide in Darfur and make sure that these crucial needs are addressed in the FY08 Supplemental Funding Bill.
