Darfur's Critical Hour

The International Criminal Court has decided to issue an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, and Bashir may react by lashing out against civilians, aid workers and peacekeeping forces.

We need a clear, bold message from President Obama that the U.S. will not stand for retribution from Khartoum. And President Obama should immediately appoint a high-level official with the stature, mandate and authority to be the U.S. point person on Sudan—and bring an end to the genocide.

Dear Mr. President,

I am writing to strongly urge you to appoint an "owner" of U.S. Sudan policy as soon as possible. To end this genocide, we need someone with the necessary stature, mandate and authority to bring peace and protection to Darfuris and accountability to the perpetrators.

The decision to issue a warrant for the arrest of Sudan's President Bashir brings us to a turning point in the Darfur conflict.

It has the potential to be a huge triumph for justice, decency and the rule of law.  But without the proper diplomatic response, Darfur and all of Sudan could spiral into deeper violence and despair.

As you know, there is reason to believe that Bashir will react by lashing out against innocent people.

The United States must make clear that the Sudanese government will be held responsible for any retaliatory action against civilians, the humanitarian aid community or the UNAMID peacekeeping force.

You said last year that we must pursue peace in Darfur with "unstinting resolve." Now is a moment when that resolve will be tested.

Show strength, Mr. President, by empowering someone to be your emissary in Sudan. It's time to bring the full weight of the unique influence of your administration to bear on this crisis.  It's time to push for peace in Sudan and an end to the atrocities in Darfur.
